What does "turning into a skid" mean?

For example, say it is a snowy day and I am trying to make a left turn. I turn my steering wheel towards the left. However, during the turn, my car proceeds to do a 270 degree skid instead of just a 90 degree turn. During the skid, am I suppose to continue turning the steering wheel towards the left (the direction which I am skidding into)? Or do I turn the steering wheel towards the right (towards the road/direction I want to go)?
